Family Law Feature: Get to Know... Mary Zambreno

As a seasoned family law attorney, Mary Zambreno understands that going through the divorce process or dealing with a modification to a divorce decree can be an emotional roller-coaster for many of her clients, especially if there are children involved.

After all, according to the American Psychological Association, about 40 to 50 percent of marriages in the U.S. end in divorce.

“Thinking about taking the first few steps in the process can be daunting,” Mary said. “However, once you’ve made the decision to separate and divorce, finding the right legal advocate is the best thing you can do to position yourself for a financially stable future with a minimal amount of stress.”

After receiving her undergraduate degree from Northwestern University and her law degree from DePaul University, Mary began her legal career in Chicago where she specialized in high net worth divorce cases. This gave her the background and experience to handle extremely complex dissolution of marriage cases after she moved to Des Moines.

“Each divorce case that I handle is different – because every family and their needs are different – so each case requires unique solutions,” Mary said. “But while each case is unique, having an attorney with an empathetic nature and substantial experience by your side can help make the ordeal a much more comfortable process.” 

Mary is an experienced litigator, but because many of her clients are going through a difficult time when they contact her, Mary has committed her practice to not only providing strong courtroom representation for her clients under Iowa law, but also to providing alternative options for settlement when the situation calls for it. She is trained in collaborative divorce agreements for parties seeking an out-of-court legal agreement through private negotiations. 

Mary demonstrates respect and compassion for her clients. “While separation and divorce are difficult events, it is possible to maintain an amicable relationship throughout the process, whether you choose a collaborative agreement or a traditional courtroom dissolution of your marriage,” she said.

In addition to divorce, Mary handles complex custody and visitation issues, property division and alimony and child support matters. She also drafts prenuptial agreements and has represented several clients in adoption proceedings.
